In the 15th century, people from the northern European coast traded Portuguese salt from Aveiro, a commercial tradition that remained constant on European maritime routes.
Close to the city there is a salt flat, or marinha, which has been converted into an Ecomuseum: the Troncalhada marinha. Here, visitors can see the methods of artisanal salt production, the salt flats’ characteristic landscape, flora and fauna, and the experiences and traditions linked to this centuries-old activity. Visitors can also enjoy salt baths here.
